1441929 End attachment for ropes I BARFIELD 19 Dec 1973 [23 Dec 1972] 59958/72 Heading D1T An end fitting for a stranded wire rope comprises:- a terminal memlber 10 having a screw threaded bore 13 and an inwardly directed shoulder 14 at the inner end of the threaded portion 13; a hollow sleeve memlber 16 externally threaded for screwing into the terminal member 10 and having a tapered axial bore 20 with its largest diameter at the end to be inserted into the terminal member 10; a wedging member 22 in the form of two generally conical portions 23, 24; the taper of one portion 23 corresponding to that of the bore 20 so that the portion 23 may be inserted thereinto, the wedging member having a bore extending axially therethrough and being slit axially; and a clamping member 29 for engagement with the shoulder 14 of the terminal member 10, the clamping member having an axial tapering recess into which the other conical portion 24 of the wedging member 22 can extend. When the above components are assembled together to clamp a rope end at least some of the strands of the rope extend over the surfaces 23, 24 of the wedging member 22 so as to be clamped against the sleeve 16 and the clamping member 29. If the rope has one or more core strands these may pass through the bore in the wedging memlber 22. The wedging member 22 is split axially or formed in separate arcuate portions so that it can be tightened onto the core strands in its bore. The conical angle of the surface 23 lies in the range of 5‹ to 20‹, preferably 11‹. The conical angle of the surface 24 lies in the range of 50‹ to 70‹, preferably 60‹. The wedging member 22 may be of brass.
