Abstract

1441919 Curing fibre-reinforced resin laminates HAWKER SIDDELEY AVIATION Ltd 26 July 1973 [26 July 1972] 35026/72 Heading B5N Fibre-reinforced synthetic resin laminates, e.g. carbon fibre/epoxy resin laminates, are cured under consolidating pressure which is applied to the exterior of a deformable chamber in which the laminate is sealed, the interior of the chamber having applied thereto a fluid pressure which is less than the external pressure but higher than the resin vapour pressure to prevent outgassing and consequent void formation. As shown, the laminate 11 is separated from bleeder layers 12 by release layers 13 and the assembly is covered by a flexible membrane 14 within which the fluid pressure is applied to the resin by a gas or liquid; the external pressure is applied outside the membrane by a press or autoclave. The laminate may be preheated at a temperature below the rapid gelation point whilst vented to atmosphere or to vacuum.
