Abstract

1441961 Coating piston rings by spraying WELLWORTHY Ltd 14 March 1974 [21 March 1973] 13650/73 Heading C7F [Also in Division F2] The wear-resistant coating on a piston ring is composed of at least 70 wt. per cent of a hardwearing phase or phases and a relatively soft scuffresistant phase, in plate-like form. Preferably, the latter is of Cu or a Cu alloy. The powdered coating material may be sprayed through a plasma gun, so that the Cu is dispensed throughout the coating in thin platelets. The hard-wearing phase may be of a chromium-iron alloy or of chromium carbide in a matrix of nickel-chromium based self-fluxing alloy.
