Abstract

1441831 Measuring blood pressure T ARONSON 23 Aug 1973 [10 Nov 1972] 40076/73 Heading A5K Blood pressure measuring apparatus comprises a cuff 1, Fig. 1, an inflatable bladder 1a within the cuff 1, a pump 4, and a pressure gauge 10, the pump 4, the bladder 1a and the gauge 10 being connected by a single tube 3, and a nozzle 6 projecting from the pump 4 and having a longitudinal passage 9 and a transverse passage 15 therein between the gauge 10 and the passage 9. The cuff 1 carries a transducer 2 connected to an amplifier 11 having a sensitivity control V, for energising a light L or a speaker 5 mounted in a casing 13, the control V being set so that the amplifier output commences at systolic pressure and ceases at diastolic pressure. A needle valve 8 in the nozzle 6 permits air to be bled from the system. The casing 13 has a tubular side extension 43, Fig. 5, within which the nozzle 6' is sealed by sealing rings 45, 46, 52 and clamped by a nut 45a engaging a screw thread 25 on the end of the nozzle 6'. The pump 4' is a bulb having a one-way ball valve 16, 17 at one end and another one-way valve at the other end, consisting of a closed rubber tube 20 with a slit 21 in its wall. A reduced diameter portion 47 on the nozzle 6' defines, with the extension 43, a chamber 48 through which the passage 15' communicates with the gauge 10' through radial passages 49, 50. The cross-sectional area of the passage 15' is about 1/64th that of the passage 9'. The casing 13' has a handle 53 against which the bulb 4' may be squeezed for one-handed operation of the device.
