Abstract

1441671 Hydrogenating pulverized coal GILBERT ASSOCIATES Inc 23 Jan 1974 [29 Jan 1973] 03034/74 Heading C5E Coal is converted to gas by introducing ultrafine coal powder of a size of 4 Á and smaller to a first reactor at high temperature, e.g. 700- 1200‹ C. in the presence of H 2 , the high temperature being sufficient to cause thermal comminution and devolatilization of the ultrafine coal to form char (e.g. size <SP>1</SP>/100 Á) whereupon the char reacts with the H 2 to produce hydrocarbon gas, the reaction being exothermic and maintaining the temperature of the reactor. The products may be separated into sub micron char particles and a gas comprising CH 4 , H 2 , CO, N 2 , CO 2 , H 2 S and H 2 O. The char may be reacted with oxygen and steam in a second reactor to form a synthesis gas which is the source of H 2 for the first reactor. The gas product stream may be treated to remove CO 2 and H 2 S and passed to a catalytic methanator to enrich the gas in methane.
