Abstract

1441668 Making tubular members from sealed veneer strips SCHOCK & CO GmbH 14 Sept 1973 [15 Sept 1972] 43239/73 Headings B3B and B3T In a method of producing a succession of tubular members by peeling veneer from the periphery of a rotating log 1, the log is provided in a dampended condition and a peeling blade 7 is moved into contact with the log surface a rotary member 2 whose axis is parallel to the axis of the log and is rotated in unison therewith is provided with longitudinally extending reciprocating saw members 3 which provide a longitudinal slot in the log surface at predetermined peripheral intervals. As the log rotates strips of veneer are removed from the log surface by the blade 7, the strips so produced are coiled by a curling guide 8 adjacent the blade 7 the surface 10 of the the guide in contact with the strips 6, 6.1, 6.2 &c. making an angle of 20- 130 degrees with the tangent to the periphery of the log at the point of peeling. The curvature of the shaved strips depends on the angle of the guide with respect to the tangent at the point of peeling, the radius at which the peeling occurs, the thickness of the peeled strip and the type of log and is moisture content. The coiling effect may also be determined by the contour of the outer surface 10 of the peeling blade as shown in Fig. 3 in which the guide member is omitted, and also by the direction of rotation of the log with respect to the direction of the discharge channel along which the coiled strips travel. The action in Figs. 2 and 3 are that of a tendency to self coiling and in Figs. 1 and 4 the coiling action is assisted by a conveyer 13 and a stationary surface between which the tubular members are moved. The tubular members are subsequently conveyed to a double conveyer 15, 16 which passes through a drier 17 to remove the moisture from the coiled tubes.
