1440934 Flip-top packages MOLINS Ltd 23 Nov 1973 [24 Nov 1972] 54478/72 Headings B8C and B8P An air-impervious hinged-lid packet comprises a cup-like body portion 1 formed of an airimpervious laminate, and a lid portion 11 having a flap 10 beneath a hinge line 12 and having a strip of foam seal 14 attached to at least the periphery of the inside of the top panel 13 of the lid portion, the flap being secured to the body portion so that, when the lid is closed, the strip 14 abuts the top edges of the body portion to seal the packet. The body 1 of the packet, comprising side walls 2, 3 front and rear walls 4, 5, and a base 7, 8, is made from a rectangular blank of a laminate of card having a layer of aluminium foil which preferably forms the outer surface of the body, the blank being formed around a mandrel of rectangular cross-section and the overlapping longitudinal edges being glued, and pressed together. The lid 11, if desired, is also formed, in a similar manner, on a mandrel. The foam seal 14, which as shown covers the entire inside of the top panel 13, is preferably of decomposable foam silicone material and is about 3 mm. thick, the base of the body 1 being formed by base extensions, such as 7, 8, of the side walls 2-5 which are folded in and stuck together by adhesive and applied pressure. The body 1 may, alternatively, be formed from a tube, not shown, to the base of which a cap is adhered. As shown, the packet 1 contains 180 loose cigarettes and a small hinged-lid packet P which contains 20 cigarettes, and which may be made of a plastics material and used as a refillable case. Alternatively, the packet P could contain 200 loose cigarettes, or be of a size to contain 20 cigarettes. When the lid 11 is closed the front wall 15 engages the top of the wall 4 with a locking action, the lid being held closed by a seal, or revenue, stamp 16.
