Abstract
1440438 Cleaning with non-aqueous solvents IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 Aug 1973 [7 Sept 1972] 41484/72 Addition to 1399867 Heading D1P Printed circuits comprising lines of flux on resin-bonded paper boards are cleaned by immersion in a heated non azeotrope-forming mixture of a halogenated hydrocarbon solvent and at least 2.5 parts by weight per 100 parts of halogenated hydrocarbon of an auxiliary solvent and rinsing the article in a second liquid containing a lower proportion of the auxiliary solvent. In one embodiment the rinsing mixture is also heated and the two mixtures have a common vapour zone from which condensate is directed to the rinsing mixture which overflows into the first mixture. A plurality of rinsing mixtures may be employed. Alternatively rinsing may occur in the vapour zone and the printed circuit may be withdrawn from the apparatus and allowed to cool before being rinsed by the vapour. In a further embodiment the two mixtures have separate vapour zones, condensate from both zones being returned to the second mixture. Preferably the auxiliary solvent comprises on a weight basis 5 to 90% of the first mixture and 0.5 to 10% of the second mixture. Preferred solvents are fluorochlorohydrocarbons containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms, especially 1, 1, 2, 2, tetrachloro-1, 2-difluoroethane and 1, 1, 2-trichloro-1, 2, 2-trifluoroethane. Preferred auxiliary solvents are n-butanol, 1- 4-dioxane, 2-methoxy ethanol, 2-ethoxy ethanol and 2-butoxy ethanol. The mixtures are maintained at 30‹ to 50‹C or higher, preferably at their boiling points. Exemplified mixtures are first mixture T.C.T.F.E. containing In example 1 the two mixtures comprise 1, 1, 2-trichloro-1, 2, 2, trifluoroethane with 14.8% and 1.2% respectively of n-butanol, a mixture containing 8.4% n-butanol being added to replace losses. In example 2 the mixtures comprise 9.3% and 2.7% of 1, 4-dioxane and are topped up by a mixture containing 9.8% 1, 4-dioxane.
