Abstract

1339878 Colour anodising aluminium SOC PER L'ESERCIZIO DELL'ISTITUTO SPERIMENTALE DEI METALLI LEGGERI 13 March 1972 [15 March 1971] 11554/72 Heading C7B A process of producing a coloured anodised coating on aluminium or an alloy thereof comprises electrolysing the metal in a cell containing an electrolyte capable of producing a colouring and having a cathode cooled to a temperature below that of the electrolyte. The cathode may be stainless steel, graphite or aluminium and may be hollow or incorporate coils. A refrigerated fluid such as water or an anti-freezing liquid such as ethylene glycol having an input temperature below 25‹ C is passed through the cathode. The electrolyte may be sulphuric acid containing malaic, oxalic or tartaric acid. It may be recycled through an external heat exchanger and ion-exchange column.
