Abstract

1339630 Drying wound spools of filaments SIEMENS AG 19 April 1971 [25 July 1970] 20951/71 Heading F4G The electric field strength E (Fig. 3) in a highfrequency furnace 1 (for drying a wound spool 2 of glass fibre carried on a belt 7) is varied (as shown in Fig. 3) along the path of travel of the spools 2 so that the rate of evaporation of moisture from the spool is constant along its path. In an extension of the path beyond the point where the moisture content of the wound spool is less than 1%, the field strength is increased sharply for rapid drying to less than 0À1% moisture content. With wound spools of the same axial length but different weight, the belt speed is adjusted so that the product of belt speed and the weight of the undried spool is constant. The belt 7 is earthed, a transverse rod 3 and an inclined plate 4 are at 10 kV, and plates 5 and 6 are 35 kV.
