Abstract
1339649 Flameproofing sheet materials RADUNER & CO AG 21 Jan 1972 [12 Feb 1971] 4552/71 Heading D1P [Also in Division B2] Sheet material has a flame resistant coating of or is impregnated with a flame retardant agent applied discontinuously as areas of one concentration alternating with areas of low or zero concentration, which areas of one concentration are spaced from each other by a distance not more than ten times the thickness of the sheet material, preferably less than 5 times. The agent may contain a halogen boron or nitrogen, particularly ammonium salts of acids, or organic phosphorous compounds, or molybdenum, antimony, silicon, aluminium or preferable phosphorus, such as diammonium phosphate, and may be applied as the pure agent or in the form of dispersions, emulsions, dry powders or pastes by printing scattering, powder-dot transfer or spraying. The sheet may be fibrous, such as paper, woven, knitted or non-woven fabrics or in sheets of foam, plastics or wood, and may consist of cellulose or derivatives thereof, wool, synthetic thermoplastic polymers, copolymers or mixed polymers of acrylic, vinylic or definic monomers, of lactams or lactones. The sheet may alternatively be made of polycondensates of polyhydroxy compounds and polycarboxylic acids, of polycarboxylic acids and polyamines, of polyhydroxy compounds and isocyanates, or mixtures of such polymers. The sheet material may be coated with polymeric material and/or embossed or pressed prior to or subsequent to being given the flame-retarding coating. The sum of the areas of low or zero concentration should not exceed the sum of the areas of said one concentration by a factor of more than 10, preferably 5, and the distance between the edges of said one concentration areas should not be more than 5 times, preferably 3 times, the median diameter of these areas. The total amount of flame-retardant agent is from 2 to 30% by weight of the sheet material, and it is applied as a regular or random pattern such as dots or lines or dots connected by lines. In examples, diammonium phosphate is used to treat (1) cotton, (2) a polyester/cotton shirt and (3) a polyester blouse.
