Abstract

1339588 Hauling apparatus ABEX CORP 21 Dec 1970 [5 Jan 1970] 60680/70 Heading B8B A sheave 11 for tensioning a cable 13 during winding in and paying out from a winch 36, comprises a driven hub 14 over the periphery of which the cable passes, and a pair of resiliently mounted annular plates 15 mounted on opposite sides of the hub for gripping the cable therebetween when external pressure means is selectively applied to the plates to displace them towards each other. The plates 15 are mounted on annular spring plates 16 and have their displacement restricted by nuts and bolts 27, the radially outer peripheries of the plates 15 being tapered on the axial inside and outside to facilitate cable entry and entry into a tapered peripheral groove 35 of a pressure roller 12. The latter, mounted on an axle parallel to the axle of the sheave 11, is moveable radially of the sheave to cause the clamping of the cable by the plates 15, under the control of hydraulic rams 32. The sheave 11 is driven by an hydraulic motor 19, the driving pressure of which is controlled by an adjustable pressure relief valve 47, the rams 32 being operated by the same hydraulic pressure, which can be vented to a reservoir 40 through lines 55, 53 if a solenoid valve 54 is de-energized. The fluid motor drive for the sheave 11 resists the winding in of cable 13 on to the winch 36 and attempts to pull cable from the winch 36 at a greater rate than it is being payed out, whereby the cable between the sheave 11 and winch 36 is always taut. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown) the resiliently mounted side plates are displaced by a pair of rollers mounted on inclined axles on a bar displaceable radially of the sheave whereby the rollers engage the tapered peripheries of the side plates. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 (not shown) the side plates are displaced by rollers, each mounted on an arm which is pivotable towards the other arm under the action of a floating hydraulic ram connecting the two arms.
