1339316 Lactones FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 4 Aug 1971 [11 Aug 1970] 36574/71 Heading C4P [Also in Division D2] The invention comprises compounds of general formula wherein A completes a substituted or unsubstituted naphthalene radical which may be partly hydrogenated, each R, which may be the same or different, is H, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aralkyl which may be substituted in the aryl moiety, or optionally substituted aryl, each X which may be the same or different, is halogen or alkyl; each Y, which may be the same or different, is alkyl or halogenoalkyl and Z is H, halogen, alkyl, halogenoalkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy, carbalkoxy, trifluoromethyl, nitro, optionally substituted amino, optionally substituted carbonamido or optionally substituted sulphonamido or one of Y and Z together represent the radical n is 0-3, and m is 0-4. They are prepared by condensing a compound of the general formula. wherein R, X, Y Z m and n are as above with a naphthol, naphthol ether or ester optionally substituted by halogen, OH, alkyl or alkoxy at least one of the ortho positions to the ether or ester group being unsubstituted. The products obtained are used as colour producing compounds in printing and copying material.
