Abstract

1339194 Indicating position of cables MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 12 July 1971 [13 July 1970] 32676/71 Heading H2C [Also in Division F2] A rupturable tube for burying alongside a conduit (5, Fig. 2, not shown) to give visual indication of the position of the conduit comprises inner and outer tubular layers 1 of flexible, corrosion-resistant plastics material, e.g. polyethylene, with an intermediate layer 2 of aluminium, and indicating means 3 contained in compartments, the length of the tube being at least fifty times its outside diameter. Upon rupture of the tube the indicating means 3 produces a visual signal in the form of smoke or flames which rise above the surface of the ground. The indicating means may be wholly a pyrophoric material, examples of which are given, or a pyrotechnic material, which may contain a vaporizable dye and/or some pyrophoric material, or it may be a material which produces smoke upon contact with surrounding moisture, e.g. titanium tetrachloride. The compartments may be hermetically sealed in which case a propellant such as sulphur dioxide may be included in the tube.
