Abstract
1338696 Ornithopters D V CURRY 18 July 1972 [23 April 1971] 10936/71 Heading B7W An ornithopter comprises a pair of wings which are flapped about an axis JK, each wing comprising respectively an inner portion A, B and an outer portion C, C1 which outer portions may be adjusted in azimuth about axes H, H1, and in pitch about axes coincident with spars O, O1. The portions A, B are connected to a framework comprising members R, S connected together by a cross-bar P and to the wing portions at W, W1 by hooped members M, N. When manually operated the lower ends of members R, S are attached to an operator's feet, Fig. 5, and the pivot provided at axis J, K is secured to a harness 10, 12, 14 secured to the operator's body and flapping movements are obtained by repeated movements of the operator's body from a crouched or half squatting position (Fig. 4, not shown) to the erect position shown in Fig. 5, movements of the wings being assisted by elastic members 20 and 22 and by the operator actuating cranked inner extensions of the spars, which extensions are guided by arcuate tracks L, L1.
