Abstract

1338204 Acrylic copolymer composition KANSAI PAINT CO Ltd 23 March 1972 [26 March 1971] 13558/72 Heading C3B A thermosetting powder coating composition comprises (A) an acrylic copolymer and one or more of (B) aliphatic dibasic acids HOOC-RCOOH or anhydrides or substances yielding such acids under curing conditions, where R is a saturated or unsaturated C 4-11 aliphatic hydrocarbon group. (A) has glass transition temperature 40-70‹ C and is a copolymer of (1) 70-95% wt. of at least one acrylate or methacrylate CH 2 =CR<SP>1</SP>-COOR<SP>2</SP> (a) where R<SP>1</SP> is H or CH 3 and R<SP>2</SP> is C 1-17 alkyl, which may be mixed with up to 1À5 parts by wt., based on (a), of other vinyl monomers, and (2) 5-30% wt. of glycidyl acrylate and/or methacrylate. The vinyl monomer may be styrene, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate or toluene. (A) and (B) may be melt blended and then cooled and pulverized to particle-size 20-150 Ám. Also present may be pigments, fillers, or levelling agents, e.g. TiO 2 , iron oxide, carbon black. Copolymer (A) may be made by heating the monomers with water, Na lauryl sulphate, Na 2 SO 4 , polyvinyl alcohol, azobisisobutyronitrile, stearic acid. Use.-Coating cars, steel furniture, and fences, e.g. by electrostatic powder coating of zincphosphate-treated steel, followed by baking at 150-220‹ C.
