Abstract
1338103 Weight compensating WERKZEUGMAOHINENFABRIK ADOLF WALDRICH COBURG 19 April 1971 [6 Feb 1970] 21109/71 Heading B3B In a portal or cantilever type machine tool having a vertically movable cross rail 2 and a horizontally movable tool head 1, the weight of the tool head 1 is counter balanced by a cable 3 which leads to a cable winch 5 mounted on a carriage 8 which is movable in synchronism with the tool head 1 along rails 11, 14, the winch 5 being mounted resiliently on the carriage 8 by means of a spring biased slide movable in the direction of the cable, and a feeler and a regulator control the power supply to the winch motor 7b, e.g. hydraulic supply to an hydraulic motor, to produce a constant pull on the cable 3 despite vertical adjustment of the cross rail 2. A further feeler mounted on the carriage 8 engages the cable and detects angular deflection from a vertical position of the cable so that as the tool head 1 moves along the cross rail 2 the carriage 8 moves in synchronizm therewith. The further feeler controls a regulator for a further hydraulic motor that drives a pinion in engagement with a rack attached to the crosshead 22, or an auxiliary girder 13, to move the carriage 8. To prevent bending distortion being passed to the crosshead 22 and columns 21, the rail 11 is mounted on an auxiliary girder 13 mounted by free fulcrums at each end. The cable pull is set greater than the weight of the tool head 1 to pull the head up against the guides that will take load during a cutting operation.
