1338164 Counting apparatus FERRANTI Ltd 13 Jan 1972 [27 Jan 1971] 3244/71 Heading G4D In a drum type register of the kind having a transfer wheel 18 between the first and second digit wheels 10, 27 and driven by an energy storing weight 29 from the first digit wheel 10, the transfer wheel 18 is provided with a flange 19 carrying some numerals which overlie a modified series of numerals 12 of the first digit wheel 10 so arranged that at the transfer point the visible first digit changed rapidly. As shown wheel 10 has numerals ... 8, 0, 0, 1 while the flange has 9, 9, 0; as the two wheels 10, 18 rotate together the first 9 appears in the viewing window covering the first 0; on further rotation the second 9 appears covering the second 0 and then the weight 29 falls turning the transfer wheel 18 (and the second digit wheel 27 through transfer mechanism 26), quickly, clear of the first digit wheel to bring its second 0 into view. Should the transfer take place too soon, e.g. due to a shock, or too late, e.g. due to excessive friction then the first zero on wheel 10 or the zero on wheel 11 will appear, the maximum error in reading being one unit. This can be detected by an additional scale 13 inscribed on a flange 13 of the first digit wheel: if these small figures disagree with the units reading the reading must be corrected by adding or subtracting one unit.
