1337534 Feeding sheets AMF Inc 23 March 1972 [25 March 1971] 13774/72 Heading B8R A pair of endless chains carry a plurality of pairs of rollers 3, 4 along a closed path, the rollers rotating, by means of pinions engaging teeth on a stationary member 30, in the opposite direction to the chain movement, and each roller pair in turn passing over a pile of sheets F. The roller 3 of each pair is provided with apertures 203, 303 communicating with a source of suction by means of a hole 302 passing over a suction box 10 beside the sheet pile, the hole being closable by a cam-actuated valve 15. Three stationary parallel cams 16 are arranged to act on levers 12 to open the valves while passing over the pile. The levers of successive roller pairs are in a different lateral alignment so that any one cam controls every third valve. In operation, a sheet is picked up by a roller 3, the hole 203 engaging the end of the sheet, carried round the roller 3 counterclockwise, and as the suction is released directed into a path between comb members 17, 18 and to the roller 4, which feeds it on to a suction belt 19 for transfer to a sheet-handling machine. Associated with each cam 16 is a de-activating unit comprising an air cylinder, which withdraws the cam from the path of the levers 12 and thus prevents opening of the valve 15 and the feed of a sheet, in response to a signal when the handling-machine is not prepared to receive a sheet.
