Abstract
1336669 Plastics tubes DU PONT OF CANADA Ltd 4 May 1971 [4 May 1970] 12952/71 Heading F2P [Also in Divisions B8 and B5] A plastic pirn sleeve Fig. 1 comprises a tube with longitudinal rows of substantially circumferential grooves alternating with longitudinal blank areas; the grooves having a profile that is chordal, lunate or lenticular with a maximum depth peak-to-valley of 0À002 to 0À010 inch and tapering at either end to be flush with the blank areas; there being between 30 and 70 grooves per inch and the longitudinal rows being between 1/32 and ¢ inch wide. The longitudinal rows may extend axially or helically with or without interruptions along the tube and the grooves may diverge from being truly circumferential by as much as 10 degrees. The material of the sleeve may be, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, pvc or its copolymers, cellulosics such as cellulose acetate butyrate, or an ABS resin. Apparatus for producing the sleeve may comprise a mandrel 10 which supports a thermoplastic tube 11 and passes within a frame 12 carrying grooved wheels 15 mounted in brackets 17 and kept pressed against the tube 11 by springs 19. The die wheels 15 may be heated. Alternatively the grooves may be impressed into the tube by flat dies instead of the die wheels, and these may either be patterned metal belts or reciprocating engraved bars. Other possible apparatus is stated to be either a heated wire grid or helical threaded rollers or cutters.
