Abstract
1336051 Treating foods E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 16 Aug 1971 38395/71 Heading A2D Articles are treated to reduce their microorganism populations by contacting the articles with a liquid, saturated, fluorinated chlorohydrocarbon having a boiling point in the range -50C to 50C, collecting the chlorohydrocarbon after the above treatment, reducing its micro organism population and recycling the chlorohydrocarbon to the article contacting step. The article may also be frozen after the above treatment preferably using the same fluorinated chlorohydrocarbon. The fluorinated chlorohydrocarbon is preferably dichlorodifluoromethane. The treatment is particularly applicable to foodstuffs, exemplified treatments being of corn and shrimps. The micro-organism population of the fluorinated chlorohydrocarbon may be reduced by means of flotation, exposure to ultra-violet radiation, or the addition to the collected fluoroinated chlorohydrocarbon of chlorine or propionic acid.
