Abstract
1335348 Desulphurized fuel gases WHESSOE Ltd 19 April 1971 [19 Feb 1970] 7942/70 Heading C5E Hydrocarbon oils are separated into a heavier fraction and a lighter fraction and the heavier fraction is hydrogenated using a hydrogenation gas provided by processing at least a portion of the lighter fraction. A crude oil 1 is distilled at 4 to provide a heavier fraction 5 and a lighter fraction 8. The heavier fraction is hydrogenated in a fluid bed 7 with a hydrogenating gas 12 to produce a product gas which is quenched at 13 with a water spray to 250-300‹ C., further cooled at 15 and separated at 16 into a condensate 17 containing benzene, toluene and xylene, a portion of which can be recycled to the hydrogenator 7 to upgrade the benzene, toluene and xylene, and a gas 16. The gas 16 is passed to an absorber 18 to remove sulphur and produce a desulphurized fuel gas. The sulphur rich absorbent is passed to a tower 19 in which its pressure is reduced and the hydrogen sulphide 22 liberated is converted to liquid sulphur 24 and the regenerated absorbent is returned to the column 18. The lighter fraction 8 is condensed at 26, in part returned to the column 4 and in part passed through desulphurizer vessels 32, 33 and 34. The desulphurized effluent from 34 is reacted with steam 37 in the catalytic reformer 35 which is heated by off-gas from the column 4. The effluent from the reformer 35 is cooled and passed to a shift converter 40. After cooling and passage through a carbon dioxide absorption column 43 the hydrogenation gas is compressed, preheated and passed into the hydrogenator 7. Suitably 20-40% of the crude oil is separated as the lighter fraction 8. A portion of the fuel gas product can be recycled to the reformer 35.
