1334859 Ammoxidation of alkanes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd and POWER GAS Ltd 20 Nov 1970 [25 Nov 1969 24 March 1970 (5) 29 April 1970 (3) 11 May 1970 2 July 1970 (3)] 53348/70 14075/70 14076/70 14077/70 14078/70 14079/70 20660/70 20661/70 20662/70 22555/70 32096/70 32097/70 and 32151/70 Divided out of 57587/69 Heading C2C Unsaturated nitriles are prepared by passing a feed gas comprising an alkane and ammonia in the vapour phase wherein the alkane has a partial pressure of greater than 0À20 atmospheres absolute, over a solid ammoxidation catalyst consisting of (a) the oxides of tin and a metal selected from titanium, zirconium and hafnium; (b) the oxides of vanadium and molybdenum; or (c) the oxides of titanium and a metal selected from tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, chromium and uranium; or in each case, a compound containing the two selected metals and oxygen, at a temperature of greater than 500 C. Examples describe the preparation of acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile from propane and butane respectively.
