Abstract
1333711 Matrix-fibre composite J G MORLEY 6 Nov 1970 [15 Nov 1969 29 Jan 1970] 56026/69 and 9774/73 Heading D1R A composite material comprises a polymeric concrete or metallic matrix, reinforced by fibres or rods having an outer sheath and at least one inner member, the shear strength of the interfacial bond between matrix and outer sheath being greater than between outer sheath and the or one of the inner members. Crack proporgation is thereby diminished. The reinforcements are preferably continuous parallel filaments having an outer sheath comprising 20-30% of the filament cross-sectional area. In one embodiment a number of carbon or glass fibres are embedded in an epoxy resin and surrounded by a metal tube of hexagonal cross section, the tubes being bonded together by an adhesive matrix more strongly than they are bonded to their cores. Alternatively boron is deposited in successive layers on a substrate fibre from the vapour phase. One or more layers of carbon are deposited to reduce the adhesion between layers or between filament and matrix. Boron, boron carbide or silicon carbide may be deposited from the gas phase onto a high modulus carbon fibre. Filaments comprising core, sheath and interlayer may be extruded from polymeric materials and the filaments carbonised, the interlayer producing a weaker, less ordered form of carbon, e.g. graphite. Carbon filament precursors may be etched with nitric acid or, after pyrolysis, by heating in air. The core may be tubular. The shear stress of the core/sheath interface may become, less as the applied tensile stress increases in the embodiment in which the sheath is a helical winding and the core/ sheath "bond" is due solely to frictional forces. A concrete matrix may be reinforced with steel rods or bundles of resin impregnated glass fibres.
