Abstract
1333704 Oil filter FRAM EUROPE Ltd 23 Nov 1970 [12 Sept 1969] 45189/69 Heading B1D An oil filter for an I.C. engine comprises an annular filter element 3 enclosing an axial rod or tube 2 around which is also mounted a by-pass valve unit comprising a housing 11 enclosing a cavity 12 and supporting at least one spring-biassed poppet valve 29. The filter shown is open at one end, and elment 3 and the by-pass unit are both removable, but the filter could be completely closed and adapted to screw on to the engine. As shown, tube 2 is perforate and acts as an outlet for filtered fluid, but a solid rod could be used with an outlet opening into the space between rod and element. The housing 11 is made by seaming together two dished halves (Figs. 3 to 6, not shown) and comprises an aperture (13) which makes a seal with tube 2 adjacent gasket 6 and an aperture (14), which may be enlarged to provide annular gap 14' or could fit tube 2 closely in which case adjacent holes are provided in place of gap 14'. In Fig. 1 poppet valves 29 (details in Figs. 7 to 9, not shown) extend outwards from housing 11, but in Fig. 10 (not shown) the valves are located, largely inside cavity (112), which provides an axially shorter filter. Element 3 may be of pleated paper or a depth filter of cylindrical form.
