1333079 Piezo-electric generators VERNITRON Ltd 30 Sept 1971 [2 Oct 1970] 47072/70 Heading H2A An igniter comprises one or more axially aligned piezo-electric elements 1 with an anvil 2 and end cap 3 at opposite ends, the assembly thus formed being surrounded by a tubular housing 5 of thermoplastics material which shrinks on setting and which is moulded on to the assembly so as to compress it on setting, the housing having an integral extension 8 beyond the end cap accommodating a spring-loaded hammer 10. Normally a peg 11 on the hammer rests on a shoulder formed at the side of an elongated slot in the housing but on depression of a push-button 15 so as to compress an actuating spring 14, a cam face on the push-button releases the peg from the shoulder and allows spring 14 to propel the hammer into contact with the end cap 3 against a return spring 13. The spring 14 is secured to the hammer such that on retraction, the hammer is rotated to re-engage peg 11 with the shoulder. A laterally extending terminal 4 is secured between the end of element 1 and the cap 3 and connection to the other end of the element is made via the anvil and a mounting frame 18. Where more than one element is provided the several elements may be serially connected or spaced by insulators (22), Fig. 3 (not shown) in which case terminals are connected to the ends of each element and the anvil is insulated from the frame by the housing 5.
