Abstract
1332862 Polymerizing trioxane DEUTSCHE GOLD - UND SILBER - SCHEIDEANSTALT 7 Jan 1971 [26 Jan 1970] 780/71 Heading C3P Trioxane and compounds containing at least one C-O-C bond in cyclic or non-cyclic arrangement are copolymerized in bulk in the presence of a cationic initiator selected from perchloric acid and its derivatives and fluorinecontaining antimony and arsenic compounds, in an open vessel in the absence of measures for dissipating heat such that the ratio between the surface area of the liquid level of the polymerization mixture and its weight is 0À04 to 2 (cm<SP>2</SP>./g.), whereby the mixture is spontaneously heated during the reaction to at least 100‹ C. so that any unreacted monomers and/or other low molecular weight compounds are simultaneously evaporated. The process may be effected continuously or batchwise in a reaction vessel which may be preheated. The product may be cooled and wet-ground, e.g. in methanol, methalyl, water or aqueous buffer solutions. Many suitable comonomers and initiators are listed and examples describe the copolymerization of trioxane with 1,3-dioxolan and (1) t-butyl perchlorate, (2) butylal and perchloric acid, and (6) t-butyl perchlorate, the last being effected on a glass-fibre-reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene conveyer belt; with poly(1,3- dioxolan) and (3) t-butyl perchlorate; and with 1,3-dioxepane and (4 and 5) dibutylal and antimony pentafluoride.
