Abstract

1332338 Broach tool LAPOINTE MACHINE TOOL CO 16 Dec 1970 [2 Jan 1970] 59698/70 Heading B3L A broach assembly comprises a plurality of elongated bars 18 having cutting teeth along one edge mounted within a cylindrical holder 10 annularly about a common axis to form an internal broach through which a workpiece is moved to effect surface broaching thereof, e.g. helical gear teeth or splines, said bars providing mutual support for each other by side-by-side contact and the teeth along each bar, having a uniform spacing and increasing progressively in height from one end to the other. The bars have converging sides and an arcuate outer surface so as together they form a cylindrical assembly. A first bar 18a is located by pins 30 and the rest are arranged relative thereto and clamped by bolts 42. End caps 14, 16 locate and clamp the bars longitudinally, the end cap 14 including adjusting screws 14e. The broach assembly may comprise a plurality of longitudinally arranged sets or arrays of bars 18 between the end caps 14, 16. For cutting helical teeth on a workpiece each tooth may be inclined to a helix angle. A machine tool for producing a helical gear (Fig. 8, not shown) comprises a stationary mounting (50), (52) for the broach assembly and a vertically movable drawbar (56) on which a gear blank is mounted. A coupling (62) allows the drawbar to rotate as it moves by the action of a helically grooved guide portion (56b) engaging in a nut (58a) in a vertically movable bearing block (58). The drawbar can be moved by an hydraulic ram or a screw driven ram.
