Abstract
1332129 Continuous casting USS ENGINEERS & CONSULTANTS Inc 2 Oct 1970 [6 Oct 1969] 46988/70 Heading B3F A one-piece (copper) liner 13 of an openended mould is supported in a (steel) frame having: side and end plates 10 and 12, the latter lying between the former; fasteners such as screws 15, 16 extending through the plates 10, 12 to engage the liner 13; the plates having channels 19, 22 in their inner faces for watercooling of the liner; removable bolts 14 extending through one side plate 10 and an end plate 12 and into the other side plate 10 so that the liner 13 (with screws 15, 16 removed) and end plates 12 can be slipped out and a four-piece (adjustably-walled) liner (43, 44) put in; there being (four) combined conduit and spacer members 27 between inside faces (of wing extensions (25), 26) of the side plates 10, each with a conduit connected to the channels 19, 22 and a spacer which is adjustable (by exposure of more or less of the length of a pair of its screw portions 38) to accommodate liners of different width. There may be spring washers under the heads of bolts 14 to render the side plates 10 yieldable; and a row of thermocouples 18 to detect the melt level in the mould. There is an outlet 21 at the head of each side waterchannel 19 and outlet (20) at the foot of each. The end channels 22 similarly have upper and lower outlets 24 and inlets (23). Guides 39 on members 27 coact with a supporting framework. When the one-piece liner 13 and end plates 12 have been removed, the side and end walls (43 and 44) of the four-piece liner are inserted together with narrower end plates (45) which fit, in this case, between the liner side walls (43). The side plates 10 carry lugs 46, Fig. 6, at the bottom to support the end walls (44) and plates (45). Plates 48 are bolted to the ends of the side plates 10 above wings 25 and below wings (26). Bolts 49 threaded in the plates have grooves 50 which receive clips 47 on the plates 45. The end walls 44 are adjusted to a required width of casting and together with the end plates 45 are chosen for a required breadth of casting.
