Abstract

1332166 Stretchable waistbands QUICK SERVICE TEXTILES INC 2 Dec 1970 [15 Dec 1969 2 March 1970 8 Sept 1970] 57371/70 Heading A3V [Also in Divisions B2 B5 and Dl] A longitudinally-stretchable assembly for a marginal portion such as the waist of an article of wearing apparel to preclude rollover and to impart a resilient, body-hugging characteristic to said portion includes as shown in Figure 1 a band 210 which is elastic in the longitudinal, peripheral direction of the assembly, one edge of the band being formed into an inward fold 215, a strip of textile fabric 218 on the inside of the waist band, said strip having monofilaments in the weft direction to preclude roll-over of the marginal portion and an elastic warp in said longitudinal, peripheral direction and an elastic substance on or impregnated into said strip whereby the monofilaments and said elastic warp are bound to each other, one edge of the strip being disposed within the fold and adjacent the bight thereof, and means securing the strip within the fold. The band 210 is joined to the shell 211 of the garment by stitching 213. Preferably the stiffening strip 218 comprises nylon monofilaments and is preferably curved transversely. The band 210 may be of stretch broadcloth, double knit fabric, or a fabric including polyurethane thread. A strip 230, e.g. bias cut fabric is sewed to the components 210 and 218 by stitches 231 and a curtain 234 is sewed to the strip 218 and the folded-up lower marginal area of the component 230 by a row of stitches 235. Other similar assemblies are also illustrated. The elastic warp of the strip of textile fabric may comprise crimped yarn and the weft may be nylon or polyester or natural monofilament, e.g. horse hair, or mineral fibre such as glass, or metal. After weaving the fabric may be shrunk. The elastic substance may be an elastomer, e.g. a nitrile, neoprene, and may be applied as a latex or plastisol by knife coating. Alternatively the elastic substance in pasty form may be deposited on a release paper and transferred to the fabric. The fabric may also be produced by applying a foam to a fabric having a non-crimped warp yarn and a weft having a low count to posite is overfed in order to relax the fabric in the warp direction. Alternatively a film of elastic material may be integrated with a fabric already containing crimped yarn or alternatively a fabric woven under tension and comprising unwrapped web rubber alternated with cotton yarn warp so that during the winding- up the cotton yarn retracts to a crimped state. The film may be bonded to the base fabric by heating, e.g. with radio-frequency energy or by cementing or flame-bonding.
