Abstract
1331722 Selective punching INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 19 April 1971 [26 March 1970] 24293/71 Heading B4B A system for transmitting motion, e.g. in a record card punching apparatus comprises driven elements 18, a driving element 34, means 30 for moving the driving element 34, interposers 22 each movable between an operative position for transmitting movement between the elements 34, 18 and a rest position spaced from the driving element 34, a pair of magnets 24, 26 for biasing continuously the interposers 22 towards the rest position and respective actuator means 28, 29 for selectively moving them into the operative position. The elements 18 may constitute punches for projection into a die 14 through a stripper 12 to punch a card 74, a series of punches being provided transversely of the feed direction, Fig. 2 (not shown). A common bail 32 of the driving element 34 is reciprocable by means of drive shaft eccentrics 30a, each respective interposer 22, freely supported on a common rod 58, being normally held in the rest position against a sloping face 50a of a respective slot 50, 52 of a block 20 by magnetic attraction to the nearer one of the magnets 24, 26. The slots 50, 52 are formed as two alternating offset series with adjacent interposers oppositely facing. For actuating the punches 18, by moving the interposers 22 so that an abutment edge 56a lies in the path of the bail 32, respective pistons 28, 29 are actuated by pneumatic pressure through inlets 60a, so that piston rods 28a, 29a move the interposers 22. For retracting the punches 18 after operation, finger portions 44 of an upper limb of the bail 32 engage land portions 18a of the punches 18 to withdraw them in guiding bushes 70.
