Abstract

1331429 Gas chromatography; determination of polymer properties TORONTO UNIVERSITY COUNCIL OF 11 Sept 1970 [22 Sept 1969] 46590/69 Heading B1X Apparatus for determining physical or chemical characteristics of a material e.g. a polymer comprises a thermostatted tube 15 internally coated with the material to be investigated and into which are periodically but simultaneously injected, with the aid of a controlled flow of carrier gas, slugs of a probe gas and an inert marker gas. The probe gas reversibly interacts with the coating and hence its flow through the tube is retarded. Gas detector means, e.g. flame ionisation or thermal conductivity detector, detects the peaks due to the inert marker plug and probe plug and a first timer records the time differential between the two peaks. A second timer which is responsive to the detection of the probe gas activates the injection of the gases at predetermined intervals. Physical characteristics of the polymer may then be determined by using the prevailing temperature and pressure of the tube.
