Abstract
1331162 Settling chamber WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 5 July 1971 [15 Oct 1970 31 March 1971] 31458/71 Heading BID [Also in Division C1] An apparatus for removing solids from liquid (e.g. fresh or sea water) comprises means for adding coagulant to the liquid, a number of flotation cells coupled in series with a stagnation chamber between every two cells and means for removing the solids from the surface of the liquid in the cells. As shown the apparatus comprises a tank divided by longitudinally extending baffle 34 and transverse baffles 36, 38 into an inlet zone adjacent liquid inlet 26, flotation chambers 28, 30, stagnation chamber 40 and outlet zone adjacent outlet 68, the chambers being in communication through apertures in the baffles, and skimmer 70 for removing floating solids into incinerator 18. Air diffusers 54, 56 in the flotation chambers 28, 30 are supplied with a supersaturated air solution from vessel 46 by jet pump 44 which receives air from source 58 and liquid from the outlet zone. The pressure of the solution is reduced by valves 50, 52 so that minute air bubbles are produced in the chambers 28, 30 through the diffusers 54, 56. A decreasing amount of supersaturated air solution is directed to each succeeding flotation chamber in the direction of liquid flow. Coagulant (e.g. Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ) from a tank 20 is added to the liquid in tank 14 provided with air diffuser 22 to aid mixing, or inlet line 26 and lime from another tank 20 (only one shown) may be added to the liquid in the stagnation chamber 40. The liquid from the outlet zone may be further treated in a carbon filter.
