1330984 Printing processes FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 27 Sept 1971 [28 Sept 1970 15 Dec 1970 (2)] 44994/71 Addition to 1329065 Heading B6C [Also in Divisions C3 D2 and G2] A colour developer composition for use in the preparation of pressure-sensitive and heatsensitive recording sheets and also for colour developer inks which are applied to paper sheets either through a stencil or directly, comprise (i) a condensate of an aromatic carboxylic acid having at least one hydroxy group or its anhydride and an aldehyde or acetylene and (ii) a metal compound. Preferred metal compounds include oxides, hydroxides and carbonates of Mg, Ca, Ba, Zn, Cd, Hg, Al, Sn and Pb and also basic aluminium acetate, basic lead acetate, basic lead hydroxide, basic magnesium carbonate and basic lead carbonate. Additional ingredients which may be present include an inorganic pigment such as the silicate of Al, Zn, Pb or Sn, colloidal hydrated aluminium silicate, zeolite, bentonite, kaolin, clay or talc; a binder such as gum arabic, ethyl cellulose, styrene-butadiene copolymer or latex, nitrocellulose or methyl - methacrylate - butadiene latex; a plasticizer such as an ester of phosphoric, phthalic, adipic or sebacic acid, chlorinated paraffin or castor oil; a stabilizer such as an alkali or an alkali metal salt of an organic acid. The ingredients are dissolved or dispersed in an organic solvent and/or water and the resulting composition is coated on paper to form colour developer sheets. These sheets are used in combination with conventional colour formers such as Crystal Violet Lactone and 3 - benzyl - amino - 7 - diethylaminofluorane. In Examples 1-4 numerous compositions are described containing (A) a condensate of salicylic acid and HCHO and (B) a condensate of 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid and HCHO with various solvents, metal compounds, binders and with and without pigments. These compositions are coated on paper and the resulting sheets are placed on CVL colour former sheets and pressurized to form colour images. In Examples 5 and 6 colour developer ink compositions are described containing a varnish, condensate (A) or (B), a metal compound and optionally a pigment. The inks are applied to a paper by flexo- or gravure-printing and colour images are formed as in Examples 1-4.
