Abstract

1330414 Vibrators J W A WESTWOOD 24 Feb 1972 [5 March 1971] 6204/71 Heading F2X A vibrator comprises a piston slidably disposed in a cylinder, there being ports in the cylinder through which gaseous fluid under pressure can be supplied and exhausted to cause reciprocation of the piston, either or both of the interengaging cylindrical surfaces of the piston and cylinder being formed of a material having a low coefficient of friction and the vibrator being run without an additional lubricant between these surfaces. In one such vibrator, the cylinder 23 is lined with two sleeves 29, 30 separated at their adjacent ends to form an annular recess 31. Communicating with this recess is an inlet port 32 in the cylinder 23, in which cylinder there are also outlet ports 33, 34 on either side of the inlet port 32. The piston 26 has L-shaped passages 27, 28 formed in it and these enable either the inlet port 32 or one of the outlet ports 33, 34 to communicate with an end space of the cylinder 23, according to the position of the piston 26. In the position shown, there is no such communication and in order to start the vibrator, the applied pressure is reversed several times at the inlet port 32 and this has the effect of causing small movements of the piston. After some reversals of pressure the piston will normally move to allow full flow through either of the passages 27, 28, whereupon normal operation commences. The sleeves 29, 30 are formed of a material of low coefficient of friction, for example, tin or leadbronze in which graphite is impregnated, iron or nickel (or an iron-nickel alloy) in which graphite is distributed, reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene, nylon containing molybdenum disulphide, or plastics materials of ceramic-like formulation and having fillings of lubricant substances. In an alternative construction (Fig. 2, not shown), the cylinder has the inlet port at one end and a spring at the other, the piston being urged against the spring by the applied pressure until an exhaust port is uncovered by the piston, whereupon the gas escapes and the piston returns towards its original position, which sequence is then repeated.
