Abstract

1330444 Preparation of basic azo dyes AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 2 March 1972 [22 April 1971] 9852/72 Heading C4P Water-soluble pyridinium azo bases are obtained from 2- or 3-(2-hydroxy-1-naphthylazo)- pyridine or 2- or 3-(4-amino-or-dialkylaminophenylazo)-pyridine by reaction with an alkylating agent in a mixture of water and nitrobenzene as the reaction medium, said alkylating agent being added at a temperature of from 25‹ to 50‹ C. in an amount of from 1.0 to 1.15 moles per mole of said base separating the product into a nitrobenzene phase and an aqueous phase and recovering the pyridinium salt from the aqueous phase.
