Abstract

1330320 Applying predetermined tension to a bolt MAC LEAN-FOGG LOCK NUT CO 12 Oct 1970 48365/70 Heading F2H A fastener assembly for clamping together two members 30, 31 with a predetermined and limited tensile load comprises a bolt 27, a collar 10 and a nut 14, the collar fitting around the nut and having a threaded part which is designed to be ruptured from the collar at a predetermined shear stress, the load being transferred at that stage from the collar to the nut. The collar 10 is preferably hexagonal and has a threaded extension 11 with a cylindrical outer surface 18, the collar also having counterbores 12, 13, the diameter of bore 13 being at least as large as the external diameter of surface 18. Nut 14 is housed in bore 12 and has a cylindrical or preferably hexagonal portion 15 and a cylindrical portion 16, indentations 22, 23 frictionally holding nut 14 in bore 12. In use, the collar 10 and nut 14 are threaded on to the bolt 27, a tool driving collar 10 which consequently frictionally transmits drive to nut 14. Lower surface 24 of nut 14 and lower surface 25 of collar 10 contact member 30 approximately simultaneously, and continued rotation of collar 10 applies pressure to the joint members 30, 31, nut 14 following collar 10, but applying no force to surface 34. When a predetermined clamping stress is reached extension 11 is sheared from collar 10 at comers 20, 21, relieving the clamping stress, members 30, 31 relaxing against nut 14 which then takes up the clamping action. Extension 11 is then further threaded on to bolt 27 to jam against nut 14, whereupon collar 10 may be removed or left in place as desired.
