1330164 Emulsions; concretes FATS & PROTEINS RESEARCH FOUNDATION Inc 4 Sept 1970 42423/70 Headings C1A and C1H An oil-in-water emulsion for use as a Portland cement additive comprises an oil phase including a mixture of biologically occurring glycerides and uncombined fatty acid, said fatty acid being in an amount no greater than 40% by weight of said mixture and a water phase dispersing a pulverulent mineral selected from silica flour, talc, powdered clays, mica dust and diatomaceous earth of fineness at least 140 mesh (Tyler) and when combined with the oil phase being present in an amount at least 35% by weight of the combination, hydrated lime in amount not exceeding 45% by weight of the oil phase and pulverulent mineral, and calcium chloride in an amount of at least 5% by weight on the same basis. Suitable fatty substances which include in themselves uncombined fatty acid are Choice White Grease, No. 1 Dark Tallow, No. 2 Dark Tallow and crude non- degummed soybean oil other oils specified are linseed, corn, codfish, herring and sperm whale oils. Hydrated dolomitic lime containing Mg(OH) 2 may be used in place of hydrated lime. Calcium carbonate or other alkali metal or alkaline earth metal carbonates may also be included as optional ingredients of the composition. The emulsion may be prepared by adding the calcium chloride and pulverulent material to water and after solution of the calcium chloride, adding the hydrated lime (and optionally calcium carbonate), mixing in a colloid mill and adding the fatty material until an emulsion is formed. Alternatively the fatty material may be dissolved in a solvent such as toluene or mineral spirits, the lime and pulverulent material added with mild agitation, and the water in which the calcium chloride has been dissolved added slowly to the organic mixture. The solvent may be present in the product in an amount approximating to 30% of the solids present. The additive confers water repellancy on a cement sand mixture.
