Abstract
1330060 Maleic anhydride BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 19 April 1971 [28 Feb 1970] 22671/71 Heading C2C Maleic anhydride is prepared by adding benzene to air which has been heated to a temperature of from 100‹ to 200‹ C. and passing the resulting gas mixture to a tubular reactor containing a catalyst consisting of 45 to 90% by weight of TiO 2 , from 0À2 to 20% by weight of V 2 O 5 , from 8 to 30% by weight of MoO 3 and from 1 to 20% by weight of P 2 O 5 , maintaining a temperature of from 380‹ to 450‹ C. in the interior of the tubes, heat exchange being effected by means of a salt bath kept at from 355‹ to 370‹ C. which is recycled through the reactor by entering and leaving uniformly from all directions through an annular duct, the reaction gas leaving the reactor being cooled to a temperature of from 160‹ to 180‹ C. and then fed to a scrubbing tower in which the maleic anhydride is scrubbed out by means of a recycled cooled aqueous maleic acid solution, the recovered 30 to 50% maleic acid solution being concentrated to more than 90% in a falling film evaporator or a succession thereof, the concentrate being split in another falling film evaporator into maleic anhydride vapour and steam, the removal of the water of reaction being effected without any inert entrainer directly by the maleic anhydride vapour, the crude maleic anhydride obtained by fractional condensation being continuously distilled.
