Abstract

1329754 Treating castings UNION CARBIDE CORP 9 Dec 1970 [10 Dec 1969] 58364/70 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] Alloy castings are removed from the moulds and placed in a vertically disposed heat retaining zone through which air is passed in an upward direction. The flow of castings downwards under gravity is regulated so that the temperature thereof decreases from above 1000‹ C. to about 650‹ C. at less than 1‹ C. per minute. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises an insulated container and a variable speed conveyer at the discharge opening of the container at the lower end thereof, the speed of the conveyer regulating the flow of castings through the container and, hence, their rate of cooling. The conveyer may have apertures through which fumes may pass. The castings may be fed with an insulating material such as vermiculite or sand.
