Abstract

1329412 Particle accelerators SCIENCE RESEARCH COUNCIL 10 Sept 1970 [18 Sept 1969] 46172/69 Heading H1D A coil for generating a beam bending or beam focusing magnetic field in a particle accelerator, comprises two parallel side runs joined at their ends by transverse portions and is characterized in that in cross-section the windings forming the side runs are interrupted at appropriate locations chosen to enhance the uniformity or purity of the magnetic field generated by the coil. The coil shown in cross-section in Fig. 3 produces a dipole field and the windings extend from the axis COD through an angle 0 of 71À84 degrees, spacers 22 and 23 extending between angles of 33À33 to 37À12 degrees and between 53À14 to 63À38 degrees. In an alternative construction there is a single spacer in each quadrant extending between 43À50 and 52À60 degrees, and the winding extends over 67À40 degrees. In a magnetic field of order N, these angles should be divided by N/2, e.g. for a quadrupole field the angles are halved. The end portions of the coil may extend away from the cylindrical boundary of the coil in the manner of a saddle coil, Fig. 4 (not shown). Alternatively as shown in Fig. 5, the conductors 33-38 are arranged parallel to each other and have an inclination #<SP>1</SP> to the Z axis where P#cot#<SP>1</SP>+L(#)=Qcos# and P and Q are constants and L(#) is the axial length as shown in Fig. 5. The coils may be formed of superconductors.
