Abstract

1329364 Pipe joints CPF PLASTICS Ltd 30 Sept 1971 45661/71 Heading F2G Pipes 8, 10 made of, or lined internally with, thermoplastic resin material are connected by an internal ferrule 2 of a solvent-softenable thermoplastic material having at least one tapered tubular section 4 for insertion into the pipe end and preferably means 6 for limiting the extent of this insertion. In the embodiment shown, the insertion limiting means comprises a circumferential shoulder 6 against which the pipes abut. The tapered portions 4 of the fitting 2 which may be of P.V.C. and the plain bore-ends of the pipes 8, 10 receive an application of a solvent to soften the thermoplastic material and the pipes are then pushed on to the fitting. The solvent evaporates to effect a welded joint and an outer layer 12 of reinforced synthetic resin may be applied to enclose the joint. The taper of the tubular section 4 is decreased when a pipe end is received thereon and in another embodiment the taper is decreased upon making the joint to substantially a uniform wall thickness (32) (Fig. 3, not shown). In a further embodiment, a connection fitting (14) (Fig. 2, not shown) has a single tapered section and a shoulder (18) at the end of a pipe section. A further pipe (20) is received on the taper after application of the solvent and an outer casing (22) of reinforced resin, e.g. glass reinforced polyester resin is added. The pipes may be of laminated construction having a glass fibre reinforced polyester resin outer covering over an inner rigid P.V.C. lining.
