Abstract
1329344 Nuclear fuel SNAM PROGETT1 SpA 19 April 1971 [31 March 1970] 25687/71 Heading G6C [Also in Division C1] Porous refractory UO 2 for use as nuclear fuel, is produced by heating UO 3 xH 2 O, obtained by calcination of one or more oxides of uranium, at 900-1300 C. for 3/4-2 hours, under inert or oxidizing atmosphere, to yield a U 3 O 8 containing product, cooling, heating to about 1600 C. for 1-2 hours in a reducing atmosphere, and cooling. The starting materials may also comprise Pu. The starting material is preferably obtained by calcination, in air, of microspheroidal particles of one or more oxides of U or U and Pu at 420-700 C. The atmosphere for the first stage may be argon or N 2 , and for the second stage H 2 or argon plus 4% H 2 .
