Abstract
1329081 Electrodeposition of composite coatings BRISTOL AEROJET Ltd 27 Aug 1970 [4 June 1969] 28191/69 Heading C7B [Also in Division F2] In electrodepositing (e.g. electroforming) a composite coating consisting of an electrolytically deposited metal matrix with particulate additions, a solution containing insoluble particles is agitated by movement generally up and down of a generally horizontal perforated agitator in a part of the solution below the part used for deposition. Fig. 1 shows a perforated agitator plate 3 which is bodily moved up and down within a tank 1 by piston rods 14 at each side of the tank, the rods moving the agitator by means of members 13, 8, 7 and 6. The pistons keep in synchronism since they are linked by means of yokes 13 and endless chains 16 passing around sprockets 19 on a rod 21. The particles used in the deposition may be ceramic, cermet or laminar solids. For example, the metal matrix may be Ni, Co, Cu, Cr or W-Co alloy and the particles may be zirconium diboride or tungsten carbide. Where the composite coating is to act as a bearing it may comprise metal matrix, ceramic particles and graphite particles. The plating may be on to steel, non-ferrous or light alloy components, or on to plastics, glass or composite materials where such materials have been rendered conductive either by incorporation of appropriate materials or by pre-coating with conductive materials.
