Abstract

1328789 Controlling vehicle headlamps R L MOORE and D G W MACE 3 Nov 1970 [6 Nov 1969] 54521/69 Heading G1A An apparatus for controlling the intensity of vehicle headlamps, which is responsive only to light given out by street lamps supplied by an A.C. power source, comprises a light sensitive means connected to a conversion means providing a signal dependent upon the amplitude of the alternating intensity variations, and control means adapted to control a lamp intensity in dependence upon the amplitude of the intensity variations. In the two embodiments disclosed, control is effected by switching off a dipped headlamp element for the duration of a pulse produced from a monostable multi-vibrator. The frequency of the switching being dependent on the amplitude of said alternating intensity variation. In one embodiment, Fig.1, light is received by a detector 10 whose signal is amplified by an A.C. amplifier 11 (thereby excluding D.C. components due to twilight etc.) A D.C. restoration circuit 12 supplies a peak detector circuit 13 whose output waveform is in proportion to the peaks of the D.C. restored signal. A low level detector 14 (circuit Fig. 2 not shown) provides a D.C. signal which is proportional to the magnitude of the minima in the signal from the peak detector circuit, the signal being subsequently inverted by inverter 19 and fed into a comparator 18. The D.C. restoration circuit 12 also feeds a pulse generator 15 which amplifies the D.C. restored signal and dips it to provide rectangular pulses of constant duration. These pulses are fed to a counter 16 and then by way of a digital-to-analogue converter 17 to the comparator 18. When the output of the inverter equals the output of the digital-toanalogue converter, the comparator activates a gate 20 allowing a pulse from a generator 15 to pass to a switching circuit 21 which disconnects the dip filaments of headlamps 22, 23 for the duration of that pulse. At the same time the pulse passing through the gate 20 resets the counter 16 by way of a reset circuit 24. A detailed transistor circuit is described with reference to Fig.3 (not shown).
