Abstract

1328399 Continuous casting OUTOKUMPU OY 14 Dec 1970 [15 Dec 1969] 59327/70 Heading B3F To cast rod, bar, plate or pipe, molten metal is sucked up into a mould 19 (of graphite and containing a tapered mandrel 18 if pipe is to be cast), the top portion being cooled, as by water flow through a jacket 17, so that the metal is sufficiently solid to be withdrawn upwards for further cooling in a pipe 15, as by water in a jacket 14. The suction is created by low pressure in a chamber 11 to which the cooling pipe 15 is connected. There may be several moulds 19 dipping into the melt in a container. Water flows downwards from an inlet A, around a baffle 16 in the jacket 4 and upwards inside the baffle. The vacuum may be such as to degas the melt. Above the apparatus is withdrawing equipment and possibly cutting and reeling devices also.
