Abstract
1328158 Hardness measuring CONSOLIDATED PAPER (BAHAMAS) Ltd 2 Nov 1970 [5 Nov 1969] 51944/70 Headings G1S and G1N A hardness tester comprises a means for applying a force to a test piece thereby forming a contact area, a first means for obtaining a first value corresponding to such force, a second means for obtaining a second value corresponding to a force experienced by an area of the surface of the test piece which is less than the contact area, and means for comparing the two values. The hardness of a paper roll 20, Fig.1, is tested by pressing a rotatable wheel 58 against the roll, the wheel being journalled in a slidable frame 50 supported in a movable carriage 40 itself mounted on a pedestal 14 movable along tracks 16. The wheel supports roll contact buttons 60, 62, Fig.3,5, which successively contact relatively large and small areas of the roll which may not be completely round and compress piezo-electric crystals 61, 63. The pulses generated in the crystals pass through impedance converters 70, 72, Fig.6, within the wheel and are collected by slip rings 73, 75 and conducted to further circuitry comprising amplifiers 74, 76, and impedance matching circuits each comprising a capacitor, a resistor and a reverse biased diode. The output of the two integrating circuits is a D.C. voltage proportional to the heights of the input pulses, and in order to measure the ratio of these voltages, which gives a reasonable indication of the roll hardness, they are fed to an analogue divider module 78 through impedance matching circuits 80, 82 respectively. The output of 78 is a D.C. voltage proportional to the two inputs and forms a suitable signal for strip recording. The output indicates the hardness of the roll 20. The button 62 could be dispensed with by providing a constant loading means for holding the wheel 58 against the roll 20 and the hardness would then be obtained directly from the load sensed by the small button 62. The crystals may be replaced by strain gauges or other energy conversion devices, and the output from the apparatus may be used to control the roll winding.
