Abstract

1328033 Measuring outlines PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 Nov 1971 [6 Nov 1970] 51110/71 Heading G1A In an apparatus for determining the configuration at least part of a body 5 wherein a sensing probe 3 mounted on a carriage 2 which travels on a support 1 about a point 19 the output of the sensing probe is fed to a servo motor 4 to adjust its radial position so that as the carriage moves about the body the distance between the body and the probe is maintained constant. In the sensing probe, Fig. 2, radiation from a source 13 is directed by a radiation guide 7 to a point aligned with the axis of a cylindrical recess 9 containing two radiation detectors as shown. The two detectors receive radiation reflected from the body 5 and their difference signal is used by the servometer to control the probe's position until the detectors are equally illuminated. To prevent the sensing probe 3 remaining in contact with the body 5 should it touch it, the probe is provided with a plate 8 of Piezo-electric material which when actuated by stressing causes the sensing probe to move away from the body. In alternative embodiments the support may be elliptical, curved through 180 degrees or helical.
