Abstract
1327401 Cooling multi-stage catalytic reaction T SUWA 9 Sept 1970 [11 Sept 1969] 43189/70 Headings B1F and B1X [Also in Division C1] Apparatus for the catalytic oxidation of ammonia with oxygen to produce nitrous oxide comprises a multistage reactor having means for supporting at least two catalyst beds in series, the beds being spaced from one another, means for supplying a reaction mixture comprising ammonia and oxygen to the first catalyst bed, means for suppling a reaction mixture comprising fresh ammonia and the gaseous product from a previous catalyst bed to each succeeding catalyst bed and means associated with at least each of the catalyst beds except the last for circulating a heat abstraction medium therein. In the illustrated embodiment catalyst beds 2, each having means 3 for circulation of heat abstraction medium, are disposed in a vertical tower 1 to the top of which a mixture of oxygen and ammonia can be admitted whilst means are provided for addition of fresh ammonia between the catalyst beds. The apparatus may also include means (not rated) for purifying the product nitrous oxide comprising i) a purification vessel having a gas inlet and outlet and an inlet and outlet for alkaline solution, ii) a compressor connected to the gas outlet of said purification vessel, iii) a first absorption vessel having a water inlet, a gas inlet connected to the outlet of said compressor, a gas outlet for unabsorbed gases and an outlet for water containing dissolved N 2 O, iv) a first desorption vessel having an inlet connected to the water outlet of the first absorption vessel, a gas oulet for the desorbed N 2 O and a water outlet, v) a second absorption vessel having a water inlet, a gas inlet connected to the gas outlet of the first desorption vessel and separate outlets for water containing dissolved N 2 O and for the unabsorbed gases, and vi) a second desorbtion vessel connected to the water outlets of both the first desorption vessel and the second absorption vessel and having an outlet for desorbed N 2 O and for water.
