Abstract
1327145 Packages E I DU FONT DE NEMOURS & CO 19 Jan 1971 [19 Jan 1970 30 Nov 1970] 2566/71 Heading B8C [Also in Divisions B2 and B5] A package comprises a container in the shape of a tube formed by sealing overlapping edges of a composite film, the container being sealed at the top and bottom to enclose the contents of the package, the composite film structure consisting essentially of a regenerated cellulose film, containing an anchoring agent, laminated directly to a biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate film, said composite film structure bearing on at least the cellulose film exterior surface a coating of a vinylidene chloride copolymer. In a preferred embodiment, a coating of the copolymer is present on both surfaces. The composite film structure may be made by conditioning a surface of the biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate film by an electric discharge, laminating the conditioned surface directly to a regenerated cellulose film containing an anchoring agent by passing the films between rollers and coating at least the cellulose film surface of the resultant laminate. At least one of the rollers may be heated. The film may be conditioned while passing over a heated roller. Coating may be effected by running the laminate through an organic solvent solution of the copolymer. In an alternative embodiment, the conditioning is effected by a flame treatment. Specified anchoring agents are polyalkyleno imines and thermosetting resins e.g. ureaaldehyde resins, melamine-aldehyde resins, melamine-urea-aldehyde resins, melamine-formaldehyde-polyalkylene polyamine resins, guanidine-urea-aldehyde resins, guanidine-carbamidealdehyde resins and mixtures thereof. Specified vinylidene chloride copolymers are copolymers of vinylidene chloride with acrylic or itaconic acid and with at least one other monomer copolymerizable therewith e.g. acrylonitrile, a C 1 to C 18 alkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, phenyl methacrylate, cyclohexyl methacrylate, p-cyclohexylphenyl methacrylate, methacrylonitrile, methyl vinyl ketone and vinyl chloride. The vinylidene chloride copolymer may be admixed with behenic acid, a slip agent e.g. finely divided magnesium silicate, bentonite clay or mica and waxes e.g. a glyceride ester, a microcrystalline wax, a paraffin wax or a high molecular weight amide. Either surface of the product may be further coated with another layer e.g. a heat-sealable ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer.
